Gog and Magog

The people of Gog and Magog are one of the peoples who passed through human history, as they were mentioned in all the heavenly religions, and literary works related to them were also authored. And tyranny and abundance, as their appearance is considered a sign of the Great Hour.

etymology and descent

The people of Gog and Magog were called by this: from Al-Ajeej, i.e., the inflamed of the fire, and if the fire is kindled, it becomes turbulent and its flames become intertwined with each other.[1] And it was said: because of their abundance and severity, and it was said: from Al-Ajaj, which is very salty water, and it was said: two foreign names, and it was said: They are because of their abundance like this, and they are from the children of Yafith bin Noah, by agreement of the genealogists.[2]

It came in the hadith narrated by Abu Huraira, may God be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said: (He was born to Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. ).[3]

Gog and Magog in the Qur’an and Sunnah

يَرجِعُ ذكر يأجوج ومأجوج في القرآن الكريم والموجود في سورة الكهف إلى زمان الملك الصّالح ذي القرنين والذي كان يَجوب الأرض مُصْلِحاً فيها، قال الله تعالى: (ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَ سَبَبًا * حَتَّى إِذَا بَلَغَ بَيْنَ السَّدَّيْنِ وَجَدَ مِنْ دُونِهِمَا قَوْمًا لَا يَكَادُونَ يَفْقَهُونَ قَوْلًا * قَالُوا يَاذَا الْقَرْنَيْنِ إِنَّ يَأْجُوجَ وَمَأْجُوجَ مُفْسِدُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ فَهَلْ نَجْعَلُ لَكَ خَرْجًا عَلَى أَنْ تَجْعَلَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهُمْ سَدًّا * قَالَ مَا مَكَّنِّي فِيهِ رَبِّي خَيْرٌ فَأَعِينُونِي بِقُوَّةٍ أَجْعَلْ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُمْ رَدْمًا * آتُونِي زُبَرَ الْحَدِيدِ حَتَّى إِذَا سَاوَى بَيْنَ الصَّدَفَيْنِ قَالَ انْفُخُوا حَتَّى إِذَا جَعَلَهُ نَارًا قَالَ آتُونِي أُفْرِغْ عَلَيْهِ قِطْرًا) ,[4] During his travels in the land for reform, he passed by people who were close to Gog and Magog, so the people of those countries asked him to build a dam to protect them from Gog and Magog and their evil; Gog and Magog were corrupt and evil people in the land, and those at that time had no power or power over them, and this is what Dhul-Qarnayn did; As he built a great dam between them and Gog and Magog, God Almighty described it in the Holy Qur’an as being of iron and molten copper, and this dam is still standing to this day in a place known only to God Almighty.

Gog and Magog are of three types: their length is classified as the length of rice, and their length and width are the same, and a type where one of them covers his ear and wraps himself in the other, covering the rest of his body. On the authority of Ibn Abbas, he said: The Prophet of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said:[6] He said: Abdullah bin Masoud was amazed at their large number and said: “None of Gog and Magog will die until a thousand men are born to him of his own loins.”[7]

Corruption of the people of Gog and Magog

And when the Hour comes, the people of Gog and Magog will make a great corruption on the earth. Their appearance will be after the Antichrist, and after the descent of Jesus, the son of Mary, and the appearance of the Awaited Mahdi. The people of Gog and Magog will appear after the fight with the Antichrist is over; When God Almighty revealed to Jesus, peace be upon him, that Gog and Magog have spread in the land, and that no one has the ability to fight them, they are many in number as the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, mentioned in a way that no one can imagine, and after that, Jesus, peace be upon him, and those with him go Of the believers in the protection of God Almighty, and they take shelter in Mount Al-Tur, and Gog and Magog roam the country, corrupting them, and the righteous remain with Jesus, peace be upon him, sheltered in Mount Al-Tur.[8]

The Messenger of God – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him – narrated that to his companions; On the authority of Abu Saeed Al -Khurairi, he said: I heard the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said:[9] فَيَغْشَوْنَ الْأَرْضَ، وَيَنْحَازُ الْمُسْلِمُونَ عَنْهُمْ إِلَى مَدَائِنِهِمْ وَحُصُونِهِمْ، وَيَضُمُّونَ إِلَيْهِمْ مَوَاشِيهِمْ، فَيَشْرَبُونَ مِيَاهَ الْأَرْضِ، حَتَّى إِنَّ بَعْضَهُمْ لَيَمُرُّ بِالنَّهْرِ فَيَشْرَبُونَ مَا فِيهِ، حَتَّى يَتْرُكُوهُ يَابِسًا، حَتَّى إِنَّ مَنْ بَعْدَهُمْ لَيَمُرُّ بِذَلِكَ النَّهْرِ، فَيَقُولُ: لَقَدْ كَانَ هَا هُنَا مَاءٌ مَرَّةً، حَتَّى لَمْ يَبْقَ مِنَ النَّاسِ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا انْحَازَ إِلَى حِصْنٍ أَوْ مَدِينَةٍ، قَالَ قَائِلُهُمْ: هَؤُلَاءِ أَهْلُ الْأَرْضِ قَدْ فَرَغْنَا مِنْهُمْ، بَقِيَ أَهْلُ السَّمَاءِ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ يَهُزُّ أَحَدُهُمْ حَرْبَتَهُ، ثُمَّ يَرْمِي بِهَا إِلَى السَّمَاءِ، فَتَرْجِعُ إِلَيْهِ مُخَضَّبَةً دَمًا لِلْبَلَاءِ وَالْفِتْنَةِ.

Then God Almighty sends rain on the earth, and it washes the earth from them, and God Almighty commands the earth after it to return its blessings to it.[11]
