Backbiting and its rule

Backbiting is one of the sins and disobedience that God Almighty has forbidden. Where the prohibition came from it in many legal texts in the Qur’an and Sunnah, God Almighty said: {And some of you do not cope with one of you, and one of you loves to eat the flesh of his brother dead, and he will be forgotten, and they will be blessed. [الحجرات: 12]. The definition of backbiting came in the hadith narrated by Abu Huraira, may God be pleased with him: It was said: (Oh, Messenger of God, what is backbiting? He said: Your brother reminded you of what he dislikes. It was said: Did you see if my brother had what I say? He said: If there is what you say in it, then it is You slandered him, and if there was nothing in it that you say, then you slandered him). [رواه أبو داود، وصحّحه الألباني].

In the previous hadith, the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, explained the meaning of backbiting, which is not permissible for a Muslim to fall into; Backbiting is for a Muslim to remind his Muslim brother of something he hates, but if he praises him and praises him, this is not considered forbidden backbiting, and likewise if he mentions an infidel and backbites him, then this mention is not considered forbidden backbiting. But if a Muslim mentions something his Muslim brother is not in, then this is the falsehood that the Messenger, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, referred to in the previous hadith, and falsehood is more forbidden than backbiting, so it is incumbent on all Muslims to beware of backbiting and slander.

Many scholars have made it clear that the one who backbites his Muslim brother transgresses with this backbiting two rights, not one right, and this increases the sanctity of backbiting, and the two rights are:

  • The right of God, Blessed and Exalted be He, for God has forbidden his servants from backbiting in a tightly revealed revelation, and on the tongue of His Messenger, and there is no doubt that backbiting is transgression against God’s right, disobedience to Him, and violation of His command.
  • The right of the Muslim who backbited him, spoke about it, and abused him with words.

Atonement for backbiting

And the penance for backbiting is sincere repentance to God Almighty, which is by leaving backbiting, being careful not to fall into it, regretting the backbiting that occurred in it, and resolving not to return to it, and this is the penance for transgressing the right of God. His words have reached the person who slandered him, so he must go to him, and disassociate himself from him; So that he admits his mistake in front of him, apologizes to him, and asks him for forgiveness, pardon, and forgiveness.
