The difference between night prayer and tahajjud

The tahajjud is the night prayer in particular, and some said that the tahajjud is restricted to being prayed at night after sleeping. Al-Hajjaj bin Amr al-Ansari, may God be pleased with him, said: (One of you thinks if he gets up at night and prays until it becomes that he has performed the ritual prayer, but after the tahajjud, he does not pray the tahajjud. The prayer after sleeping, and that was the prayer of the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him).[1] As for qiyaam al-layl, it is spending the night, and it is not necessary that it take a long time of the night, but rather a part of it, even if this part is only one hour spent by the servant in remembrance, prayer, reading the Qur’an and other acts of worship. Among the acts of worship, whether the prayer is before or after sleep. As for the tahajjud inclusive of prayer only, and specific to it alone. There are two opinions regarding the first one regarding the tahajjud.[2]

How to pray Tahajjud

The Tahajjud prayer is offered in two rak’ahs, and it is desirable that it be concluded with one rak’ah of tension, as the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said: (The night prayer is two by two.[3] A slave can pray eleven or thirteen units of prayer, and this number is sufficient only. The Tahajjud prayer is the opening prayer. It has been received in more than one form.[4]

Certain reasons for waking up at night

There are many reasons that assist a person in performing qiyaam al-layl, including his love for his Creator, Glory be to Him, his longing for his supplication, his monologue and closeness to him, his sincerity in his worship, and his love also for the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, and his knowledge of the virtue of this qiyaam, and his making use of his spare time and the health that he enjoys, as well as his eagerness to sleep. Early morning and purity, maintaining a nap, and not stressing oneself during the day with something that is useless, in addition to immunizing oneself when he sleeps with exorcisms, the Ayat al-Kursi, the remembrances of sleep, striving against the soul and the devil, staying away from sins and misdeeds, and always remembering death, as it came in the honorable hadith: ( If you come in the evening, do not wait for the morning, and if you wake up, do not wait for the evening, and take from your health for your illness, and from your life for your death).[5] One of the most important aids for performing qiyaam al-layl is the safety of the heart and its distance from following whims and heresies, doubt and polytheism. The servant must pray qiyaam al-layl and continue on it, even if it is a few rak’ahs at the beginning. Continuous worship, even if it is few, is better than being many and intermittent.[6]
