The World – The Americans
Pompeo said on his Twitter account, Monday, that the United States ends exports of defense equipment supervised by the State Department and exports of sensitive dual-use technologies, overseen by the Commerce Department.
Pompeo added: “If Beijing starts dealing with Hong Kong on the basis of” one country, one system, “we should do that as well.”
For his part, US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross announced the suspension of trade concessions granted to Hong Kong, including exemptions from export licenses.
In a statement, Ross added that Washington is considering additional steps to end concessions for Hong Kong.
The US measures are in response to China’s decision to implement Chinese security laws in the Hong Kong Autonomous City.
The United States and Britain considered the Chinese decision a violation of the principles of Hong Kong’s autonomy. Washington announced sanctions against those responsible for “eroding” the city’s autonomy, and changing the basis for dealing with it.
