World – Africa

The commission announced that Mohamed Bazoum, loyal to outgoing President Muhammadu Issoufou and former President Mahamani Osman, had won 55.75 percent of the vote against opposition candidate Mahmoud Othman, who won 44.25 percent.

“These results are temporary and must be submitted for the analysis of the Constitutional Court,” said Isaka Suna, Chair of the Commission, before the meeting of the diplomatic corps and the Nigerian authorities at the Conference Palace in the capital Niamey.

It is noteworthy that about 7.4 million Nigerians, representing nearly half of the country’s population, voted in the second round of the presidential elections in the country, which faced the challenges of insecurity in the west of the country where attacks by groups affiliated with “ISIS” are frequent, and in the east, which is witnessing attacks by Nigerian Boko Haram terrorists.
