The number of cancer patients admitted to German hospitals decreased during and after 2020 lockdown

The results of a study revealed that number of cancer patients receiving treatment in German hospitals during and after first Corona closure in spring 2020 compared to same period in 2019.
According to results of study supervised by Bert Reishart from BerlinBuch clinic of HELIOS Clinics chain, rate of decline in admission of cancer patients in internal departments for diagnosis or treatment amounted to an average of 10 to 20% in mentioned period.

The results showed that patients over age of 75 were particularly affected by this decline, as number of treatment cases decreased by 20%.

The study included about 69 thousand patients in Helios clinics (75 clinics) in 13 German states, and study authors considered results to be representative of cancer patients all over Germany.

The study was based on an analysis of hospital admissions from midMarch to end of last April and period following that until midJune, and compared m with admissions in same period of 2019.
