The name of the Prophet’s horse

The scholars differed regarding the number of horses that the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, owned. His wives, and the scholars mentioned the names of the Prophet’s horses – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him – on which there was agreement: stinging, pouring, lizards, roses, rosary, slenderness, and murtajz.[1]

The position of the horse in Islam

The Prophet – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him – mentioned what explains the position of horses and the high view of Islam on them, so he said: “Goodness is tied to the forelocks of horses forever until the Day of Resurrection.”[2] What is meant by that is that goodness is inherent in the horses, and that is bound to them. Because horses are linked to conquest and fighting in the cause of God, and in that, Iyadh said: “If there is blessing in its forelocks, then it will be far from bad.” It was also said that blessing and goodness are among the things that are inherent in horses if they are prepared for fighting and conquest, not with all horses, and it was said that good bears the meaning of reward. Al-Mughnim, and the forelock is the hair at the front of the head, and it is possible that the description is a metaphor for the entire horse, not just the forelock.[3]

Ruling on eating horse meat

The scholars differed regarding the ruling on eating horse meat. So a group of scholars went to the permissibility of eating horse meat, because there was no prohibition against it, and that the Prophet – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him – as mentioned by Jaber – may God be pleased with him – when he was traveling with him once and approved for them to eat horse meat and drink its milk, and some scholars and among them saw Abu Hanifa and his two companions disliked eating horse meat, citing the saying of God Almighty: (And horses, mules and donkeys for you to ride as an adornment).[4] Where food is not mentioned in the verse, while eating from other livestock is mentioned.[5]
