Prayers before bed

It is desirable for a Muslim to turn to God Almighty in supplication before going to sleep. Among the aforementioned supplications are the following:[1][2]

  • (Oh God, I created myself and you took it away, for you it died and revived.[3]
  • (In your name, my Lord, I put my side, and with you I raise it, if you hold my soul, have mercy on it, and if you send it, protect it as you protect your servants).[4]
  • (Oh Amabk pass slaves).[5]
  • (In your name, O God, I die and live).[6]
  • (اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شـر مَا صَنَعْتُ أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ وَأَبُوءُ لَكَ بِذَنْبِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، قَالَ: وَمَنْ قَالَهَا مِنْ النَّهَارِ مُوقِنًا بِهَا فَمَاتَ مِنْ يَوْمِهِ before evening becomes one of the people of Paradise, and whoever says it during the night while he is certain of it, dies before it is revealed).[8]
There is something above you, and you are the inner, there is nothing below you.[9]

Evening prayers

The Muslim attains many virtues in return for his remembrance of God Almighty, through him he is protected from lying and hypocrisy, peace and mercy descend upon him, and God reminds him of what he has and flaunts him.[10]

  • (There is no servant who says, in the morning of every day and in the evening of every night, “In the Name of God, with whose name nothing can harm on earth or in heaven, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing) three times, nothing will harm him.”[11]
  • The saying of the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him: (If you had said in the evening: I seek refuge in the perfect words of God from the evil of what He created, they would not harm you).[12]
  • (Whoever says in the morning and in the evening: Glory be to God and praise be to Him a hundred times: no one will come on the Day of Resurrection with anything better than what he has brought, except for someone who said the same as he said, or increased it).[13]
  • It was narrated on the authority of Abdullah bin Khubayb that he said: “We went out on a rainy night and in severe darkness, asking for the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, to pray for us, but we realized it. I did not say anything, then he said: Say, I said: O Messenger of God, what do I say? He said: {Say: He is God, the One.}[14]
For sins do not forgive only you, he said: Whoever said it from the day is certain of it, so he died from his day before he is touched, then he is one of the people of paradise, and whoever said it from the night, and he is the one who is the one who is the night, and he is the one who is the night,[15]
  • Abdullah bin Masoud, may God be pleased with him, said: (The Prophet of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, was, if he touched, he said: We are touched, and I seek the king for God, and praise be to God We’ve become and became King of God).[16]
  • (The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, used to teach his companions, saying: If one of you comes in the morning, let him say: O God, through you we have become, and with you we have reached the evening, and with you we live, and with you we die, and to you is the destiny, and to thee come, and to Thee come: and to Thee come, and to Thee come.[17]
  • Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq, may God be pleased with him, said: (O Messenger of God, give me words to say when morning and evening. He said: Say: O God, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, Lord and Sovereign of everything. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of myself and the evil of Satan and his company. Say it in the morning and in the evening, and if you sleep.[18]
  • On the authority of Abdullah bin Omar, may God be pleased with him, he said: (The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, did not leave these supplications in the evening and in the morning: O Allah, I ask you for wellness in this world and the hereafter. Uthman said: My faults – and be safe from my guardians, O God, protect me from in front of me, from behind me, from my right, from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your greatness that You should not forgive me).[19]
  • The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “Whoever says, when morning comes: There is no god but God, alone, without partner, His is the Dominion, and His is the Praise, and He is Able to do all things. Ten degrees were raised for him, and he was protected from Satan until the evening, and if he said it in the evening, he would have the same until the morning.[20]

Remembrances of sleep in the Qur’an

Islamic law legislates the reading of Quranic verses and surahs before bedtime, including:[21]

  • Ayat al-Kursi: It protects the sleeper from Satan until he wakes up.
  • The last two verses of Surat Al-Baqarah: It suffices from pests and Satan, and the night prayer.
  • Reciting Al-Mu’awwidhatayn and Surat Al-Ikhlas: After reciting them, he blows into the palms, then wipes the body as much as possible, starting from the face and head, and repeats this three times.
  • Surat Al-Kafirun: At the end of it there is a release from polytheism.
