The Iranian and Iraqi football teams fought a decisive confrontation when they met in the double qualifiers for the Asian Cup and the third round of the World Cup in Qatar at the Sheikh Mohammed bin Al Khalifa Stadium in the city of Muharraq in Manama, where Iran topped Group C after its victory over Iraq.
The Iranian national team defeated Iraq after it managed in the first half of the match to score a single goal against Iraq, making it the first team to reach the final stage of the World Cup.
Iranian national team player Sardar Azmoun scored the only goal in the 35th minute of the first half, ending the match with Iran’s victory. Iran and Iraq qualified for the decisive qualifiers despite Iraq’s loss.
Iraq qualified as the second best in the Asian groups, regardless of its loss to Iran, after Jordan lost 1-0 to Australia.
The meeting was led by a refereeing team composed of Jez Tatashev, a central referee from Uzbekistan, assisted by Tsapenko Andriy, a first assistant from Uzbekistan, a second assistant referee from South Korea, Kang Hong-doo, from South Korea, and Kim Jong-hyung from South Korea as a fourth referee.
