How to wash vegetables

  • Always wash vegetables with clean, potable water, and avoid using hot or ice water.
  • rub hard vegetables; such as carrots and cantaloupe using a vegetable brush; To get rid of the microbes attached to it.
  • Remove the leaves of leafy vegetables before washing them well.
  • soak some vegetables; cauliflower, lettuce, and broccoli in clean water for some time before use; To get rid of bacteria and germs from all angles.

Washing vegetables with white vinegar

Vinegar contains acids that eliminate 98% of bacteria and germs attached to vegetables and fruits, according to a test conducted by (Cook’s Illustrated), and this method can be applied by filling a spray bottle with three parts of water with one part of distilled white vinegar, then stirring the mixture well , and put it aside until use, then rinse the dirt on the vegetables, and use a special vegetable cleaning brush if necessary, then dry them before spraying them with the prepared vinegar solution, and cover them completely with the solution, and leave it for a period ranging from one to two minutes, and then wash the vegetables with water cold; To get rid of the vinegar flavor.[2]

Washing vegetables with hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide can be used to clean vegetables, as it removes suspended dust, and the effects of pesticides, in addition to its ability to eliminate many types of bacteria if used correctly; such as Escherichia coli, Listeria, and Salmonella, whose infection is transmitted through foods, and this method can be applied by filling a spray bottle with white vinegar, and another bottle with hydrogen peroxide, bearing in mind that it is 3%, then spraying vegetables with vinegar, then spraying them with hydrogen peroxide, and then It is well washed with water.[3]

How to wash potatoes

Potatoes can be washed by following these steps:[4]

  • Fill a large bowl with warm water, and add two to three tablespoons of white vinegar, or prepare a concentrated solution of one cup of vinegar with three cups of water, and put it in a spray bottle.
  • Put the potatoes in a solution of water and vinegar, and leave them for several minutes, or spray them with a concentrated vinegar solution before washing them.
  • Wash the potatoes under warm water, and make sure to remove any stuck dirt with the help of a vegetable cleaning brush, then wash them carefully; To get rid of vinegar.
  • Place the potatoes on a clean dish towel and allow them to dry, or wipe each bean with a clean kitchen towel.
