Stubbornness in children is a behavioral phenomenon that appears at an early age; A child before two years does not show signs or traits of stubbornness; He is highly dependent on his mother, and is characterized by neutrality, dependence, and relative subservience to orders, and the matter is not without some natural opposition and opposition to some instructions, but it does not reach the extent that it is a behavioral phenomenon that needs treatment.

Stubbornness appears in its early stages when the child is able to walk and speak; That is, as a result of the child’s beginning to feel independent and in a reasonable and moderate manner, in addition to the development of his imagination and mental perceptions; The child learns to say the word “no” before he learns to say the word “yes.” He senses his individuality and resists everything that might affect it, without being aware of the dimensions that result from the input of the situation; Therefore, it is the duty of parents to enjoy a high ability to control anger and patience, and to stay away as much as possible from oppression and cruelty. Manifestations of stubbornness in children

The child’s stubbornness appears in more than one form, as follows:[3]

  • Refusal and disobedience of orders.
  • Failure to perform tasks directly, delay in responding in addition to procrastination.
  • Insisting on unwanted and inappropriate behaviors.
  • Exaggerated responses, anger for the slightest reason.
  • The insistence on the behavior of tyranny and seizure in order to obtain its goals.
  • The child always sees himself in the position of the afflicted and the rightful, and refuses to submit and give up his views.

Types of stubbornness in children

The types are divided into three forms as follows:[1]

  • Accidental stubbornness: This stubbornness is instantaneous and instantaneous, and it occurs naturally as a result of psychological fluctuations and mood changes, and it is a symptom that disappears with the demise of its cause.
  • Repetitive stubbornness: it is reprehensible and socially and educationally rejected, which is continuous resistance, rejection and ignoring of instructions and orders with illogical and unconvincing justifications.
  • Pathological stubbornness: This type of stubbornness is very rare that accompanies mental and neurological diseases, and it usually needs psychiatrists to treat it.

Causes of stubbornness in children

The causes of stubbornness differ between acquired environmental causes, or psychological motives to satisfy certain needs, and accordingly, the causes of stubbornness were divided as follows:[3]

  • Restrictions imposed on the child’s motor and moral skills; The imposition of limitations on the movement of the child, whether because of the lack of space or the large number of artifacts and things that may harm him, in addition to neglecting his needs for movement, play and physical activity with the weakness of his conversation and communication with him, all of this makes him stubborn to try to restore his neglected self.
  • Feeling of injustice and oppression by the people around him, receiving ideal orders and impossible requests from parents; This raises the child’s stress level, and he vents what is inside him with extreme stubborn behavior.
  • Failure to satisfy the basic needs of the child; Such as feeling very hungry, sleepy, or tired, which affects his psychological balance and the high level of tension makes him hover in an unstable and stubborn manner.
  • imitating the child to the adults around him; Modeling is the most effective educational method with children. If a child sees his older brother rejecting his parents’ requests and ignoring them, he thinks that this behavior is appropriate.
  • Stubbornness is sometimes an indication of the psychological crises that a child is going through; Such as feeling jealous of the younger brother, or being exposed to intense competition, or feeling helpless and bored, so his reactions appear in a negative and oppositional way.

Treating stubbornness in children

There are many effective treatment methods that treat and limit the stubbornness of the child, including:[3][4]

  • the impact of the environment surrounding the child; The constructive educational environment and sound family upbringing create a normal child who is reconciled with those around him and with himself, free from psychological problems and behavioral disorders. The child must be surrounded by an atmosphere of love, kindness, softness, gentle speech, and warm discussion based on friendly communication, persuasion and explanation of reasons, in addition to Satisfying his needs and satisfying them, and responding to his just and reasonable demands.
  • Ignoring the child if he behaves stubbornly and deprives him of his investment; If he refuses to do some work and meets his behavior with disregard, then he loses the value of this stubbornness and what he will gain on him, and therefore he will retreat from his stubbornness for not achieving his purpose.
  • Reward and reinforce the child if he responds to directions and orders in a sound and calm manner; Physical, verbal, and other reinforcements leave an impression on the child of the benefits of obedience, obedience to commands and responding to them. The child’s positive responses should be focused and strengthened, praised and promised more rewards when he continues with positive adaptive behaviors.
  • Punishing the child directly when he is stubborn; As mentioned, obedience brings reinforcement and rewards; Stubbornness brings punishment, such as depriving a child of his money the next day if he does not go to sleep on time.
  • Not to describe the child as a stubborn child to hear of him, or to compare him to those around him of obedient children; This further entrenches stubbornness in the child’s psyche and the way he responds, in addition to not giving orders in the form of denial and rejection, as this suggests stubbornness to him and opens the door to opposition.
