Causes of constipation

- Excessive consumption of laxatives, as their continuous use leads to weakness of the intestinal muscles.
- Eating dairy products, including milk, as some people get constipated after eating them.
- Irritable bowel syndrome, colon cancer.
- Pregnancy, due to the hormonal changes that occur in a pregnant woman, and she becomes more prone to constipation than others.
- Age, where bowel movement and metabolism decrease, and lack of movement and activities, which causes constipation in the elderly significantly.
- Resisting a bowel movement and not going to a bowel movement when you feel alert, that would cause constipation.
- Certain diseases that the patient may complain of, including: Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, and hypothyroidism.
Some healthy habits can be followed to treat constipation, including:
- Follow a balanced diet rich in fiber, and its sources are vegetables, fruits and legumes, as fiber helps facilitate the passage of stool in the colon.
