As for the birth that takes place after the forty-second week of pregnancy, it is considered a late birth and may result in the emergence of many problems and complications.   • Imaging the abdomen or vagina to reveal the size of the uterus.
  • Knowing the time when the fetus’s movement was felt for the first time.

Premature birth

Premature birth is defined as the birth of the fetus before it completes the thirty-seventh week of pregnancy, and there are many factors that increase the risk of premature birth of the fetus, including: premature birth of a fetus, health problems or disorders at the level of the uterus or neck, and exposure to stress. And anxiety, and the mother’s injury to some health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, blood clotting problems, and placental problems, in addition to that, the weight of the pregnant woman plays a role in this. High, and it is worth noting that smoking, drinking alcohol, and taking legally prohibited drugs may cause premature birth of the fetus.[5]

Among the health problems that result from premature birth are the following:[5]

  • The newborn suffers from breathing problems and the inability to maintain body temperature.
  • The need for the newborn to be admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or the need for the newborn to remain in the hospital for a longer period in general.
  • Small brain size and poor development at birth.
  • Increasing the chance of suffering from some health problems such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
  • The newborn faces problems at the level of breastfeeding due to his weak ability to swallow.

Maintaining a healthy pregnancy

There are a number of tips that are offered to pregnant women to maintain a healthy pregnancy, including the following:[6]

  • Eating healthy food that provides the fetus with the necessary nutrients, such as calcium, folic acid, and iron.
  • Refrain from drinking alcohol, because alcohol is transmitted from the pregnant mother to her child, and this results in the slow growth of the fetus, and the delay or retardation of its mental abilities.
  • Reducing the amount of caffeine intake, in fact, specialists advise not to consume more than 350 milliliters of caffeine per day.
  • Quitting smoking, in addition to causing an increase in the risk of suffering from heart diseases and cancers in general, it leads to the birth of a fetus that weighs less than the normal limit, and this results in the fetus suffering from health problems immediately after its birth, in addition to increasing the possibility of suffering from many health problems later.
  • Refrain from drinking alcohol and using prohibited substances.
