The organization stated that the Bronx neighborhoods have the highest rate of Corona infections and the highest unemployment rate in New York, and these slums suffer from the highest rate of food insecurity among children in the country. Families also face a heavy burden to provide for their meals.
Claire Papino Fontino, Executive Director ofFeeding America: “Before the pandemic, 22 million children were dependent on free lunch at school. But with the closure of schools due to the Corona pandemic, this means that there is a loss of education and meals“.
She emphasized that “communities of color are twice as likely to suffer, not only from the underlying diseases that make the virus more deadly, but also from lack of food and security.”“.
