The effects of moisture on human health

The natural humidity inside the house ranges between 30-50%, and when the humidity is higher than that, the person feels a lot of discomfort and distress, not only this, but its negative impact extends to human health; They cause many health problems, including:[1]

Indirect effects of moisture on human health

High humidity causes damage to the human respiratory system in an indirect way. This is because it increases the concentration of harmful chemicals in the air by increasing the release of formaldehyde gas; That is, it helps to release trapped gases in building materials, and also through the interaction of water vapor with chemicals in the air.[2]

Adjust the humidity level in the house

The level of humidity in the house can be measured easily using a hygrometer, and then it is possible to know how to control the level of humidity so that it becomes within the normal level by:[3]

  • Using a cold air conditioner to reduce the absolute humidity – the amount of water vapor in the air – and using a hot air conditioner to reduce the specific humidity – the ratio of water vapor in the air, to what the air can carry of it.
  • Use dehumidifiers to get rid of excess moisture, and humidifiers to moisten very dry places.
  • Ventilate the house well to get rid of moisture.
  • The use of ventilation systems and heat recovery or mechanical ventilation (in English: heat recovery ventilation) to reduce relative humidity.
  • Use the suction fans in the bathrooms after using the hot water for the shower.
