Definition of mixture

A mixture is one of the chemical classifications and is also known as a mixture; The substance in chemistry is divided into three sections: the element, the compound, and the mixture. The mixture results from mixing or mixing two or more elements together, or two or more compounds together, without any chemical interaction between the components of the mixture; Where each component or component of the mixture remains, maintaining its physical and chemical properties in most cases.[1]

Mixtures are divided into two main types:

  • Homogeneous mixture: A homogeneous mixture is a mixture consisting of two or more pure substances, so that it is possible to identify the solute – that is, the substance that dissolves in another substance – and the solvent – the physical medium that dissolves the solute -, and this type of mixture is called solutions, for example sea water which consists of liquid water as a solvent and solid sodium chloride as a solute,[2] These mixtures can also be gaseous, such as air, where air consists of a group of gases dissolved in nitrogen gas, and mixtures also include some types of alloys such as steel, which consists of solid iron as a solvent and carbon steel as a solute.[3]
  • Heterogeneous mixture: It is mixtures that consist of two or more substances in undetermined proportions, so that their components can be distinguished with the naked eye, and they are divided into two parts:[1]
  • Suspended mixture: It is a mixture that consists of two substances that can be separated by clarification, i.e. leaving the mixture for a period of time without stirring, so that the solid substance settles at the bottom and the liquid substance rises, and is separated by filtration, that is, pouring the mixture onto a filter paper so that the liquid substance runs out and the solid substance remains on Filter paper, for example: boiling coffee, water and sand mixture.
  • Colloidal mixture: It is a heterogeneous mixture consisting of two or more substances, where the diameter of the particles of these substances is very small, not exceeding 1000 nanometers, so that the solid substance remains floating in the liquid substance and cannot be separated by clarification or filtration, and it has electrical properties, for example: liquid milk , blood, and gelatin.

  • The components of the mixture are separated using physical methods such as clarification, filtration, distillation, crystallization, and sublimation.
  • It consists of components with different weight ratios.
  • The process of forming a mixture is a physical mixing process and not a chemical reaction process; The bonds between the components are not broken and new bonds are not formed, and the mixing process does not produce thermal energy or the diffusion of gases or other evidence of a chemical reaction.
  • All components of the mixture preserve their properties.
